Going on a luxury holiday with toddlers can be filled with excitement but is not often described as relaxing. Despite our love for our little ones, their unpredictable actions can add complexity to the process of planning a vacation. However, do not worry, by following the appropriate advice and strategies, you can almost guarantee a fun and stress-free family getaway for all.

Before embarking on your ultimate family vacation, here are some essential tips to keep in mind when traveling with toddlers:

  1. Plan Ahead:

When it comes to traveling with toddlers, proper planning is key. Make sure to book your accommodations, flights, and any excursions well in advance. This will help you secure the best deals and ensure that you have everything organized before your trip.

Using a travel agent, like Personal Oasis, to do the planning on your behalf. They will work with you to identify your family's specific vacation needs and budget to curate the ideal holiday itinerary.

  2. Pack Wisely:

Toddlers require a lot of essentials, from diapers and wipes to snacks and toys. Pack for the type of travel you're doing. For planes I recommend a carry on filled with snacks, toys, books, comfort items, and of course more snacks. Investing in high quality diaper bags like the Itzy Ritzy Boss Plus Backpack are worth it.

If traveling domestically, I recommend packing enough essentials (e.g. diapers, formula) to get through the travel day and purchasing more when you get to your destination. If staying with friends and family, ship out these essentials in advance of your travels to cut back on luggage space!

  3. Choose Toddler-Friendly Accommodations:

When booking your hotel or vacation rental, look for toddler-friendly accommodations. Most locations will offer cribs or pack-n-plays, but some even offer high-chairs and baby-proofing. If possible, book condos with multiple rooms where toddlers can have their own space for nap-time!

If the city is large enough to utilize online grocery shopping, I recommend placing an Instacart or Shipt order as soon as you get settled into your accommodations. That allows you to stock up on any essentials, snacks, beverages, and last minute needs (e.g. sand toys, goggles) you may have forgotten.

  4. Stay Flexible:

Although having a travel itinerary is important, it's equally vital to stay flexible when traveling with toddlers. Be ready for unexpected changes and be open to adjusting according to your child's needs and routine. You may want to switch up the flow of how you vacation to mitigate meltdowns. For example, instead of going to the beach first thing in the morning you may choose to do so after their nap. Pack a picnic dinner, let them run/splash/play to their hearts content, and then bathe before bed.

  5. Bring Entertainment:

Long flights or car rides can be challenging for toddlers, so be sure to pack plenty of entertainment and snacks to keep them occupied. Consider bringing their favorite toys, books, or interactive games to help keep them entertained during travel. Did I mention snacks? Lots and lots of snacks!

  6. Be Prepared for Emergencies:

Accidents can happen, especially when traveling with toddlers. Be sure to pack a first aid kit with essentials like band-aids, fever medication, and any other necessary medications for your child. It's also a good idea to have a list of emergency contacts handy in case of any unexpected situations.

  7. Take Regular Breaks:

Toddlers have a lot of energy and need regular breaks to stretch their legs and burn off some steam. Plan for stops along your journey where your child can run around and play to prevent any meltdowns. By following these tips and staying prepared, you can ensure a stress-free and enjoyable family vacation when traveling with toddlers. Remember to be patient, stay flexible, and embrace the unpredictable nature of traveling with little ones. With the right mindset and a well-thought-out plan, you can create lasting memories with your family on your ultimate vacation!

  8. Bring Support:

Traveling with a toddler is not "relaxing" per say, but the memories you create will last a lifetime. We've found great success when bringing additional support from grandparents, aunts, and friends. The more active participants involved in curating a fun toddler experience, the fewer meltdowns and drained emotions!
